Carnival in Rijeka

Since 1982, the Tourist Board of the City of Rijeka, with the aim of preserving the centuries-old tradition of this region, has been organizing carnival celebrations, the main event of which is a carnival parade through the city of Rijeka, as a way of displaying traditional masks and city carnival groups. As all Rijeka residents agree, Rijeka has five seasons, and this fifth season is the carnival season. With its long-standing tradition and influence on the social community, the Rijeka Carnival is the largest and most famous event in the Kvarner area, and recently the most recognizable part of the image of the city of Rijeka itself. The Rijeka Carnival is unique and can be experienced personally, because it is prepared with love. For the people of Rijeka, carnival is not only a face mask, but also a way of life. The Rijeka Carnival emerged from the Mesopus tradition of the coastal region and through many years of continuity has developed into the most important carnival celebration in the Republic of Croatia.

The carnival has been included in the list of the 500 most important events in Europe (Top 500 European Events) and has been named one of the most exotic events in the world by the Sunday Times.

PILGRIMAGE TO VELIKA GOSPA, TRSATSKA GRADINA

Way back in 1291, one morning the woodcutters from Trsat saw a house in front of them in the forest that had not been there before. Terrified and amazed, they informed pastor Jurjević about this miracle, who reassured them, telling them that he already knew what it was about. Namely, it was the Nazareth house of the Blessed Virgin Mary, which, out of fear of the Turkish invader, the angels carried to Trsat where it stood for three years and seven months. However, after that time, the moment came for the house to continue its journey towards Lorret, where it was originally supposed to be transferred. Prince Martin Frankopan, to comfort the people of Trsać, built a Franciscan monastery on the same site.

Today, in Trsat, there is a shrine of Our Lady known for many apparitions and pilgrimages of many believers, especially on the day of the Assumption.

RIJEKA SUMMER NIGHTS

Rijeka's summer nights helped promote Rijeka as a city of interesting events, a city recognized as a destination for urban tourism. The festival was recognized by many spectators, and for all programs a "higher ticket" is requested, and in addition to artists from Rijeka and Croatia, artists from abroad are also happy to cooperate. After the spectacular ceremonial opening of the Festival, which takes place outdoors in front of thousands of spectators, as part of the "Rijeka Summer Nights" festival program, the best plays and premieres in drama, opera and ballet are held by Croatian and visiting foreign theater companies, alongside artists from Croatia, guests from Slovenia, Italy, France, Germany, Portugal and Japan also participate. The program ends with a special closing ceremony, with the traditional lowering of the festival flag and the awarding of the Novi List Award for the best event and the most complete realization of the Rijeka Summer Nights.

Music and stage events as part of this project are integrated into the cultural offer of Rijeka as a summer product, which takes place during the months of June and July in popular city squares and in cultural institutions.

SWIMMING MARATHON SILO

For the first time, the international swimming competition from Šilo to Crikvenica was held in 1910, organized by the then Spa Tourist Commission. The marathon is always swum on August 14 or 15, on the feast of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, the patron saint of Crikvenica.

The Šilo - Crikvenica swimming marathon has been connecting these two places since 1910 and has grown from an initial adventure venture of modest scale into a unique sporting event, which is equally attractive to both recreational and elite athletes.
